Lennert Dierickx
After studying law at the University of Ghent, Lennert Dierickx immediately went to work as a lawyer. He began his internship at the Ghent Bar Association, joining the team at COTTYN in August 2014. During his internship, he explored various branches of law, focusing over time on cases from criminal law, personal and family law, immigration law and tax law. In 2015, he was one of the laureates of the Dendermonde Bar Association’s annual moot court competition.
In March 2017, Lennert completed his internship and remained with the firm as an member of staff. In the same year, he returned to Ghent University as an assistant. For five years, Lennert combined practicing law with a part-time assistantship at the Department of European, Public and International Public Law. Among other things, he was a co-teacher of the General Principles of Law course there, a member of the Human Rights Centre and served as supervisor of several master’s theses.
Lennert is a driven and passionate lawyer who can be found in court almost every day. As a criminal lawyer, he has represented clients in several high-profile cases and acted in proceedings before the assize courts and the Court of Cassation.
Since May 2019, Lennert has been the coordinator of the Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure unit within the firm. Together with Ann Van de Steen, he coordinates the daily operation of this unit. In doing so, he helps supervise trainee lawyers who wish to study this area of law.
As partner and director, Lennert is also responsible for the firm’s Ghent office.

Lennert in his own words
As a lawyer, it is important to understand that a person who comes into contact with the justice system is often entering uncharted territory. Assisting clients with their cases is more than just having an eye for the merely legal. It is important to me that the client understands what is going on, knows what to expect, and can count on support and understanding.
A file is more than a number. Behind every case is a personal story. I want to know that story. Every client has the right to a lawyer who looks critically at a case and dares to question things. So I attach great importance to a thorough knowledge of the case and immersing myself in the different scientific fields that are often inextricably linked to a case (forensic analysis, DNA, psychology, etc.). Thinking something is good, knowing something is better.
As a proud citizen of Ghent, the Ghent proverb“nie neute, nie pleuje” – don’t whine and don’t give up -was instilled in me at an early age. Perseverance, determination and setting high standards are things I always try to incorporate into my daily practice. Once a lawyer dons his robe, only one thing matters: the client’s interests.
