Lawyer - Managing Director
Jan Van der Snickt
A newly graduated law student at Ghent University (RUG) in 1993, Jan Van der Snickt began his internship with Cottyn, Roseleth, Van de Steen & Co. Soon after his internship, it became clear that Jan would not just remain an employee. After all, entrepreneurship with an emphasis on B2B is in his blood.
As well as being a partner and managing director of the Belgian practice, his experience and expertise make him a responsible partner of the construction law, economic law and property law units. For the last of these he also fills the role of coordinator.
Recommended by Legal 500 EMEA, 2010 edition in the corporate and M&A, and property fields.
Jan Van der Snickt is the responsible partner in the COTTYN Network. He is responsible for communication and coordination between offices. More specifically, Jan is responsible partner for the offices in Belgium – Aalst, Slovakia – Bratislava, Ukraine – Kyiv, Hungary – Budapest and Romania – Bucharest. He is also the person who sets up new international partnerships with foreign companies and legal practices, often in collaboration with Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT), whether or not as part of our network.

Specialities
Jan in his own words
At the office, I am known as a real workaholic. I chase up files and projects from A to Z. With clients and colleagues alike, I like to keep on top of what is happening and especially what still needs to be done.
As well as “the job” itself, I try hard to invest the necessary time in team building. I strongly believe that a satisfied employee who fits well into the bigger picture can and will function better and, in turn, assist colleagues and clients more quickly and efficiently. An annual summer barbecue, office weekend … count me in!
To stay in my speciality, a team is like a building, you start with a solid foundation and build from the ground up.
Over the years, the firm has become increasingly active abroad, with its own offices but also in partnerships. To this day, I am the coordinator of the foreign event, which calls for a considerable time commitment on top of legal work. But it is gratifying to see us growing internationally. We are still setting our sights on many other countries inside and outside Europe.
